Jewish Traditions

Bedeken

Bedeken is a Yiddish word that means "to veil" or "to cover". It refers to a traditional pre-wedding ceremony where the groom approaches the bride a

The custom links back to the story of Jacob in the Torah, who was tricked into marrying Leah instead of Rachel because the bride's face was completely concealed by a veil.

By personally placing the veil, the groom makes sure and confirms he is marrying the ‘correct’ person. Our horn players always accompany the groom to the bride.

Circling

In traditional Jewish wedding ceremonies, the bride circles the groom 7 times under the chuppaH. In some customs, 3 times for the bride – 3 times for the groom – one together upon arriving at the chuppah (wedding canopy). Known as hakafot, this symbolic ritual represents building a protective wall of love and creating a new family world together.

Meaning and Symbolism

  • Seven Days of Creation: Reflects the building of a new world, just as God created the universe in six days and rested on the seventh.

  • Protective Wall: Symbolizes the bride casting an invisible fortress of love, safety, and spiritual protection around her groom.

  • Completeness: The number seven denotes wholeness, perfection, and a fully realized bond.

The Crowning Ceremony

In Jewish tradition, a "crowning ceremony"—most commonly known as the Mezinke tanz or krenzel—is a joyful dance at a wedding that honors parents who have just married off their only or youngest child.

How the Ceremony Works

  • Seating: The proud parents are seated together on chairs in the center of the dance floor.

  • The Crown: Family members or guests place a crown of flowers on the mother's head (and often the father's as well).

  • The Dance: Guests form a circle and dance joyfully around the parents

  • The Brooms: Children and relatives often dance past holding brooms, a playful symbol representing that they have now "swept" all their children out of the house into marriage.
